Where Road Cars Become Race Cars: How to Get Started In Hillclimbing

Have you ever dreamed of racing up a twisting, steep hill, pushing both yourself and your car to the limit? Hill climbing is one of the most accessible motorsports in the UK, and you don’t need a purpose-built race car to get started. Here’s a step-by-step guide to launching your hillclimbing journey.

Join a Club: Your First Step into the World of Hillclimb

The best way to break into hill climbing is by joining a club. In the UK, the Hillclimb & Sprint Association (HSA) is a fantastic place to start. Once you join, you can get access to a wealth of resources, events, and a network of experienced racers. From there, you’ll need to apply for a Motorsport UK RS Interclub competition license and the good news is, you can get this from as young as 14.

Choose Your Car: The Road Car Advantage

One of the most exciting aspects of hillclimbing is that you don’t need a dedicated race car to get started. In fact, many beginners use their everyday road car. Minimal modifications, such as safety gear like a helmet, overalls, and a simple roll cage, are enough to get you started. Just make sure your car is roadworthy and insured.

Get Familiar: Spectate and Learn

Before you take on your first hillclimb, it’s a good idea to attend an event as a spectator. This lets you soak in the atmosphere, understand the course, and see how the professionals handle their runs. You’ll start to get a feel for line choice, braking, and throttle control.

Your First Run: Take the Leap

Once you’ve got your license, a safe car, and some track knowledge, it’s time to enter your first event. Start small, focus on learning the course, and don’t be afraid to ask for advice from other drivers. Hillclimbing is a supportive community, and every champion started with their first step.

With patience and dedication, you’ll soon be carving your own path up the hill and who knows, you could be the next champion of the UK hill climb scene!
